  2. Acorn Group and Apple Computer Dedicate Joint Venture to Transform IT in UK

  5. - New Company formed to drive IT solutions and policy in UK Education market

  7. Cambridge, UK - 13th February 1996 - Acorn Group and Apple Computer UK today
  8. announce a new joint venture company aimed at developing information
  9. technology solutions for the UK education market and dedicated to
  10. transforming the UK’s approach to IT in education. The agreement will result
  11. in the setting up of a new company which will aim to provide the widest
  12. choice of educational IT solutions for UK schools. Operational from early
  13. April, the new company’s name and exact structure will be announced prior to
  14. commencing operations.

  16. The UK joint venture is part of a broader alliance between Olivetti
  17. Telemedia and Apple Computer, with the mission to stimulate, develop and
  18. provide comprehensive IT solutions for the current and future requirements
  19. of the European education system. The alliance intends to support the
  20. education recommendations of a report presented by the G7 working group
  21. chaired by Olivetti’s Carlo De Benedetti and supported by Apple Europe’s
  22. President Marco Landi.

  24. The report states: “Governments must give priority to education and training
  25. as strategic vehicles to create opportunities for all citizens and to create
  26. a critical demand level for all applications”. The alliance between Olivetti
  27. Telemedia and Apple Computer expects to adopt Mac OS as the underlying
  28. technology architecture for these solutions - and as part of the agreement
  29. Olivetti has licensed Mac OS technology from Apple Computer Inc.

  31. New Company based in Cambridge UK

  33. The new company will begin trading in early April and will be headed by
  34. Brendan O’Sullivan a 10 year Apple Computer veteran. Previously Brendan
  35. O’Sullivan was Managing Director of Apple Computer Ireland. The new company
  36. will be jointly owned by Acorn Group and Apple Computer UK. Acorn’s Managing
  37. Director, David Lee, will be the Chairman of the board.

  39. Brendan O’Sullivan said, "Acorn and Apple share a similar vision and
  40. commitment to the education market. Acorn and Apple’s heritage in education
  41. means that our education customers, software developers, and reseller
  42. partners can expect increased investment in sales, marketing and solutions
  43. from the new joint venture company. The political consensus that is
  44. beginning to form around the need for integrating technology in learning
  45. means that the new company is ideally placed to advise, influence and
  46. deliver on government initiatives in UK education."

  48. New Company Commits to PowerPC Platform & RISC OS products

  50. The new company will sell Acorn's award winning Risc PC, A7000, Pocket Book,
  51. Network Computers, school administration and SchoolServer products - under
  52. the Acorn brand. In addition, it will sell Apple's award winning Power
  53. Macintosh, Performa, PowerBook notebooks, Workgroup Servers, Imaging and
  54. Newton products - under the Apple brand. A priority of the new venture is to
  55. bring out products and technologies which increase the inter-operability of
  56. RISC OS and Apple technology.

  58. Over time the new company expects to adopt the PowerPC platform, the agreed
  59. hardware standard between IBM, Apple Computer and Motorola, to develop next
  60. generation personal computers - based on the powerful PowerPC microprocessor
  61. architecture. (Acorn has previously announced its intention to develop
  62. products which support the PowerPC platform standard). From early April,
  63. products from Acorn and Apple will be available from the joint venture
  64. company. Acorn Education’s customers will be able to purchase Acorn RISC OS
  65. and other education solutions through the normal channels until the new
  66. venture is operational. Similarly Apple Computer UK will continue to support
  67. its education customers until the new company is up and running.

  69. David Lee, Managing Director, Acorn Group, said: "This joint venture
  70. creates a major new force which will take educational IT in the UK into a
  71. new generation of development. The new company will provide a planned
  72. migration path, enabling users to make a smooth and logical transition from
  73. current to future technologies. Consequently, schools may continue to
  74. purchase Acorn or Apple systems as best suits them, and will be able to
  75. incorporate new generation systems alongside their existing IT provision,
  76. confident in the knowledge that they are making a sound investment in the
  77. future of educational IT."

  80. comments, "Apple and Acorn customers in education have a bright future of
  81. powerful, tailored curriculum solutions ahead of them. This agreement with
  82. Acorn is part of Apple's strategy to reinvent the way it does business and
  83. focus on growing markets that can deliver customers secure future technology
  84. investments. This is an aggressive move by the partners to ensure that
  85. educationalists and government exploit the huge potential of technology in
  86. learning".

  88. New Company Appoints Agencies and Sells Direct

  90. The new company will appoint agencies to sell its products and will supply
  91. direct to schools. Acorn Education's existing agencies and Apple Computer UK
  92. resellers, specialising in the schools market, will be invited to apply to
  93. become agencies for the new company. Initial examination suggests that the
  94. strengths of each company’s sales channels are very complementary. Because
  95. of Stock Exchange regulations agencies and resellers were informed of the
  96. agreement shortly after Acorn released the news to the London Stock Exchange
  97. earlier this morning.

  99. New Opportunities for UK Software Developers

  101. Apple’s strength in education worldwide provides Acorn's UK software
  102. developers with a  expanded market for their education software products.
  103. Acorn developers will also be encouraged to port their RISC OS software
  104. products to Mac OS to provide a wide cross-platform software base. The new
  105. company will help them develop their products to the Mac OS platform and the
  106. emerging technologies connecting to the information superhighway. Apple's
  107. dominant position in USA K-12 (kindergarten to 12 grade) market provides UK
  108. software developers with a huge potential market for innovative education
  109. software.

  111. New Venture Caps Joint History of Collaboration between Apple and Acorn

  113. Apple Computer and Acorn Group have successfully collaborated on new
  114. technology ventures in the past. In November 1990 the advanced research and
  115. development team of Acorn Computers Ltd was spun out to form the independent
  116. company, Advanced RISC Machines Limited (ARM), to design, license and market
  117. fast, inexpensive and efficient RISC processors and other enabling
  118. technology. Acorn Group and Apple Computer Inc each maintain a 43%
  119. shareholding in ARM. Acorn uses ARM chips in a wide range of products
  120. including desktops and set-top boxes. Apple utilises ARM processors in its
  121. Newton family of personal digital assistants (PDAs).

  123. Acorn Group (58% owned by Olivetti Telemedia) is one of the leading groups
  124. of high technology innovators and suppliers and comprises four divisions:
